My NYFW Experience

Better late than never right! This past fashion week was so exciting and really my first time attending so many shows and events.  I don’t even know where to begin but after it was all over I was left feeling very inspired and eager to work hard to advance to the next level of my career. There were a few things I learned that I really wanted to share with you guys.

Day 1 was the one-day I chose to take off of work to attend 2 events that I was invited to through blogging. It was pouring rain that day and I was so upset! Of course the one day I took off it was disgusting out. This really put a damper on the sheer flowy Reformation dress I had scheduled to wear. Walking into Marissa Web I was shot for Nylon street style, you can check it out here. The umbrella was really not a great accessory for this look but it was either carry the umbrella or have a see through dress!

Marissa’s collection was wearable and chic; I was in love with everything from head to toe. I was mostly inspired by the looks with opposing styles such as floral mixed with army jackets and girly white lace with tough black leather. I love mixing and matching unexpected pieces.

Later that night I attended the Yosi Samara and Gigi NY blogger boat cruise. Being that it was still raining the boat was rocking like crazy and I may or may not have felt sea sick for most of the event haha! I finally got to meet another blogger that I’ve known through Instagram for a few months; Gergana of Fashion is my Forte. Meeting other girls that have the same goals and love for fashion as I do was so much fun and we instantly clicked. We formed a true friendship and ended up hanging out a few other times while she was in NY.

Day 2 I was back at work and attended the Betsey Johnson and Nicole Miller show. Betsey is always a high energy entertaining show. It’s definitely very different than most of the other serious shows. About 30 minutes before my workday ended my DMM (or my boss’s boss) asked if I wanted to attend the Nicole Miller and Jill Stuart shows. Of course without any hesitation I accepted. Jill Stuart was a relatively small group of people; I'm talking top professionals in the industry and bloggers with 1-million+ followers. I was in heaven seeing all of the top fashion bloggers who are basically like celebrities to me.  This was my first time sitting front row at a show and I felt like I was in a complete daze (how am I here?) You can see the clothes much better and I have to admit I felt so important ha! The collection was a throwback to the 70s filled with silk gowns and earth tones. Below is one of my favorite looks from the show.

The next day I attended the Rachel Zoe show, which as you can imagine was amazing. I think that was my favorite show of the week. Rachel Zoe displays her collection as a presentation rather than a runway show which is much easier to view. You can stare at everything for as long as you want and look closely at the materials and details.

Later in the week I attended the Badgley Mischka show, which was an absolute dream. Obviously it's mainly formal gowns but everything is so breath taking. I ended fashion week attending the Jil Sander Vogue event with Gergana. It was an intimate event that gives you a chance to talk to people that you probably wouldn't start talking to at a big party. We ended up chatting with the CEO for a while which I never would have imagined happening. I was so shot from the whole week I don't even know how girls get through attending 10x more events than I did.

My biggest take away from fashion week was learning that although blogging is so fun and one of my biggest passions I'm happy to be working in fashion as well. I would never have gotten the chance to attend 90% of the things I did if it wasn’t for my job. I’ll let you in on a little secret… really only the top bloggers are inside the big name shows. A lot of girls tend to exaggerate what they are actually attending.

I started this blog to encourage girls to pursue their dreams and learn the importance of doing something to make you stand out. Having this blog has given me an advantage at work and allowed me to be the first person everyone thought of at my company to attend the shows in their honor. Whatever your passion is I definitely encourage you to figure out what it is you can do to set yourself apart. Especially in fashion, you want something to be able to demonstrate your knowledge of trends and personal style that couldn’t be shown on a piece of paper. I have to say when meeting other people I felt proud being able to say I was an assistant buyer in the industry and a style blogger.

I’ve set so many high goals for myself that I hope to accomplish in the future. Fashion week made me feel like such a small fish in a big pond but at the same time it’s important to stay confident and know that if you work hard enough you’ll eventually get to where you want to be. My next goal is to attend Paris fashion week. I couldn't even imagine actually being there!  Feel free to email me to chat about anything or any questions you might have. Thanks to everyone for reading and following me on this journey. I hope you all stay inspired and continue to dream big. -xoxo Cassandra
